The churches

The église Notre-Dame des Victoires (or église des Minimes)

L’église Notre-Dame des Victoires (ou église des Minimes)On 8 May 1864, the Notre Dame des Victoires parish church was made available to the people of Roanne, after four years of work under the direction of the Lyon architect Desjardins.
Of 13th century gothic style, the church is constructed from fine-grained hard limestone enhanced with Volvic lava stone in places.
The tower was begun only in about 1884 and was repaired a century later. The church, furthermore, lost the cross which adorned its façade and was given an additional bell in 1926.
The furniture consists, in particular, of a magnificent high altar and of its sculpted altarpiece or of statues, one of them representing Our Lady of Pity.

The église Saint Etienne

L'Eglise Saint-EtienneIn the enceinte of the château de Roanne, in 1312, a castral chapel was dedicated to Saint Etienne (Stephen). It would appear to have been built thanks to the generosity of Alice de Saint-Haon. The numerous changes undergone by the building over the centuries make it an interesting witness to the history of art.

This church, having become a parish church, contained parts erected in about 1534 in the Flamboyant Gothic style, which is not suggested by the exterior architecture, the result of the two successive enlargements of the building, from 1822 to 1845, and in 1926. The whole remains, all the same, harmonious and the neo-gothic style elements perfectly integrated in the original architecture.

One finds there interesting pieces such as a Bonnassieux Virgin Mary, J.B. Picaud's Saint Thérèse, Belloni's Tympanum or the Martyrdom of Saint Sébastien stained-glass window given by Louis XII.

The église Saint Louis

L'Eglise Saint-LouisThe Faubourg Clermont district developed considerably in the 19th century and, despite the then recent construction of the église Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, the need for an additional place of worship in the town was felt.

It was under the direction of the Roanne architect Gilbert-Jules Michaud that the construction of the église Saint-Louis was begun in 1864.

The work was completed in 1881. The initial plan of the church was not followed in its entirety. The fifth nave as well as the two spires which were originally due to be put on the towers are in fact still missing to this day.

The église Sainte Anne

Built in the heart of the Faubourg Mulsant district, the église Sainte Anne owes its construction in the 1860s to the increase in the number of inhabitants of the district. Since the Mulsant district housed many textile businesses, it was quite naturally that the name of Anne (the patron saint of weavers) was chosen for this church.

Its construction lasted almost thirty years. Since 1997, the église Sainte Anne has been a listed building. The artistic works it used to house are kept in the Musée Déchelette. However, it still has a very fine organ which belonged to Notre Dame de Fourvière.
