The twin towns

To promote cultural and socio-economic exchanges, the Town of Roanne has formed friendship links with 6 countries and more particularly with Nuneaton (England), Reutlingen (Germany), Guadalajara (Spain), Montevarchi (Italy), Piatra Neamt (Romania) and Legnica (Poland).

The relations with these twin towns take several forms:
- school exchanges between secondary school and sixth form pupils,
- cultural, sporting and other associative exchanges,
- exchanges of official municipal delegations,
- exchanges between private individuals who have been forming friendship links for many years.

 

Nuneaton and Bedworth (England) since 1956
Nuneaton is a town situated to the north of London (100 miles away) and 20 miles from Birmingham, in the county of Warwickshire. Its population is 78,403.
Nuneaton is a former mining town which has gone over into industry, food-processing and services.
The poet George Eliot came from this English town.

Reutlingen (Germany) since 1959
- 20 miles south of Stuttgart in Bade-Wurtemberg, Reutlingen is an industrial and administrative town. 112,099 people live there.
This year, on 24 and 25 October, Roanne received an important delegation from Reutlingen to celebrate the 50 years of our twinning.

Guadalajara (Spain) since 1980
In the province of New Castille on the River Henares, Guadalajara is 30 miles from Madrid.
This town has remarkable religious buildings.

Montevarchi (Italy) since 1988
Montevarchi is situated in Tuscany, 20 miles south of Florence. It was created in the 12th century near the valley of the River Arno.
It is a tourist region with many shops and a craft industry.
Its population is 22,733. Montevarchi is a traditional Italian town with lively streets with religious buildings, and the museum of paleontology.

Piatra Neamt (Romania) since 1992
- Piatra Neamt is a Romanian town in Moldavia at the foot of the Carpathians, 225 miles from Bucharest.
It is a tourist region due to its large number of monastries, and also an industrial and administrative town.

 

Legnica (Poland) since 2006
A town twinned recently with Roanne, Legnica is one of the most important urban centres in Lower Silesia on the River Kaczawa.
Its copper works, its grand piano factory and its electrotechnical industry contribute to its fame.
Its old market square has many historical monuments dating from the 13th and 14th centuries.
